Sciatica can be a severely painful condition. It is caused by inflammation of the sciatic nerve, a nerve which runs from the lower back through the hip and down the leg.

The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest in the body. It's made up of five nerves that leave the spinal cord from the lower spinal column, join in the pelvic area and then travel down the leg. As it travels down the leg, it divides into smaller nerves that reach the muscles and joints of the thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot and toes.

Sciatica is one of the most common conditions for which back surgery is recommended. Back surgery, however, is not always successful and has a high risk of complications.

Sciatica may last for weeks, months or years, even under medical care. There may be periods of improvement, but nothing of a permanent character can be achieved unless the cause of the disease is removed.

All enervating habits and indulgences, which cause disease, must be eliminated. You should rest with your eyes closed. Focus on the pain in your back. Every moment that you can, rest. There is absolutely nothing better you can do for yourself than to rest. If you give your body a complete physiological rest, you allow the body to expend all of its energy on repairing the area of dysfunction.

This is why resting is the first and foremost part of healing. Another part of the resting involves meditating on the pain. With your eyes closed, you are able to consciously go within your body and attend to it. The pain is your body's way of communicating to you. When you meditate on the pain, you are finally listening to your body. It needs and wants your attention.

If you get hungry while you are resting, eat foods cooked as little as possible, preferably raw. Raw foods are easiest for the body to metabolize and utilize. Cooked foods are very, very taxing on the body. They exhaust you of your energy.

If you are restless while resting, then exercise. The best exercise to do is anaerobic. Anaerobic exercises are those exercises of intensity for a short duration that build muscle tone, such as weight lifting. The exercise helps you to metabolize food. In addition, wherever you have muscle tone, you will not experience weakness or pain in that area internally. In other words, it will keep you strong, inside and out.

That's it, that's the prescription for healing and good health. Sounds simple? It is. You don't have to know the inner workings of the body. All you have to do is listen to your body. Your body knows more than any other living being could ever tell you. No one else can give you more accurate information about you and your needs than your body itself.

So its simple, but that doesn't mean it's easy. It takes discipline and determination. You must believe in the power of the body to heal itself. You must believe. It is the body that is doing all of the healing. No food or therapy is going to take action in the body and do the healing. They are not alive and active. It is the body that is alive and active and it knows what to do and it will tell you. Just listen!
